It is scientifically proven that the father is one of the most important figures during the development of children. This study aimed to analyze the scientific production in the national literature published between 2013 and 2018 about the parent-child relationship and its importance in child development according to psychoanalysis. An integrative review was performed in the databases BVS-Psi (= 87), SciELO (= 04), Pepsic (= 0), LILACS (= 70), Capes Periodicals (= 310) from the terms “importance of parent relationship” son ”and“ father figure and development ”. In Google Scholar (= 362) the search was performed using the keywords: Parental Function; Parent-Child Relationship; Child Development; Family; Psychoanalysis. Studies allow that the role of the father has been transformed over the years from provider to more active parenting. Studies indicate that the mother still occupies the most important role in raising children, precisely because she is the most present figure during her development and for controlling the father’s participation. The father enables the child to build a unique personality, disunited from that with the mother. It was evidenced that the father will be responsible for offering security, affection, advice, teachings, helping to develop cognitive, intellectual, affective, social skills, among others.
